My Thoughts on the Opening Ceremony
If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past week, you’ve probably heard about the drag queen parody of the Last Supper at the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics. Just last Friday, I posted an article here titled “Why I Still Watch the Olympics, and Why You Should, Too.” Let’s just say if I’d posted that article a few hours later, I would have had a different title and a different take. As a Christian and an Olympian, I have been truly heartbroken by this situation and have felt a particular responsibility to speak out, so I’m grateful to Providence Magazine for publishing an essay with my thoughts about this debacle. If you haven’t already, I hope you’ll take the time to read it (link below). As of this writing, the Olympic organizers have not issued a real apology (just a non-apology that failed to acknowledge any wrongdoing or even negligence). Please support the Olympic athletes who have worked so hard to have their turn at the Olympic dream, but please continue to respectfully, charitably, but loudly protest the horrendous decision of the organizers to mock the Christian faith.
